Friendship is the main factor that determines our happiness

“Despite the fact that there are no confirmed factors which might determine happiness, as marital status, religion, sex or age, researchers have revealed that the standard of living does not determine a certain level of happiness because we quickly “adapt to pleasure”. But, from the results of the studies, it seems that friendship is the main factor which determines the level of happiness.

“Standard of living has increased dramatically and happiness has increased not at all, and in some cases has diminished slightly. There is a lot of evidence that being richer… isn’t making us happier,” said Professor Daniel Kahneman of the University of Princeton.

Furthermore, happiness is mostly determined by other peoples’ opinions about ourselves, and not by a genuine feeling as many of us would have thought.

However, happiness influences life’s length, meaning that a happy person will live longer than a sad one.
"In one study, the difference was nine years between the happiest group and the unhappiest group, so that’s a huge effect. Cigarette smoking can knock a few years off your life, three years, if you really smoke a lot, six years. So nine years for happiness is a huge effect,” suggests Diener.“
